The Basics of Blu-Ray Technology
When considering Blu-Ray technology over standard DVD or HD-DVD technology, consumers want to know one thing: Is it possible to play standard DVDs on a Blu-Ray player? The answer is yes. Your DVD collection is safe for now.
So what is Blu-Ray technology anyway?
The short answer is a next-generation optical disc format developed to enable recording, rewriting and playback of high-definition video (HD), as well as store large amounts of data. While the name might sound a little out of this world, the name Blu-Ray is derived from the underlying technology, which utilizes a blue-violet laser to read and write data. Standard CDs and DVDs utilize a red laser. The name is a combination of “Blue” (blue-violet laser) and “Ray” (optical ray).
