			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I learned a little more about IGMP and PIM this morning. Hosts use IGMP (Internet Group Management Protocol) to register with the router to join or leave specific multicast groups. The router is then aware that it needs to forward the data stream destined to a specific multicast group to the registered hosts. There are currently three versions of IGMP, versions 1, 2, and 3.</p>
<ul>
<li>IGMPv1 &#8211; periodically sends membership queries (60-120      sec) to the all-hosts multicast address 224.0.0.1. IGMPv4 doesn&#8217;t have a      mechanism defined for hosts to leave the multicast group. There for IGMP      routers learn that a group is no longer available when it times out from      not receiving any queries from that particular group.</li>
<li>IGMPv2 &#8211; has group-specific queries that allows a      router to query membership only in a single group instead for all groups.      Instead of waiting for a timeout from a particular group, the last hosts      that are apart of a multicast group sends the router a specific message      that it&#8217;s leaving said group.</li>
<li>IGMPv3 &#8211; is still being designed and proposed. Version      3 adds the ability to filter multicasts based on multicast source so that      hosts can indicate that they want to receive traffic only from particular      sources within a multicast group.</li>
</ul>
<p>In order for Layer 2 devices to recognize multicast packets it uses either CGMP (Cisco Group Management Protocol) or IGMP Snooping. As you might have guessed, CGMP is a Cisco proprietary protocol designed for Cisco switches specifically. It allows you to manually configure specific switch ports for multicast traffic but this feature isn&#8217;t scalable because of that reason. IGMP Snooping allows a switch to eavesdrop on IGMP messages sent between routers and hosts, and updates its MAC address table accordingly.</p>
<p>PIM (Protocol Independent Multicast) is used by routers that are forwarding multicast packets. PIM uses the normal IP routing table in its multicast calculations. PIM uses what&#8217;s called distribution trees to forward multicast packets. There&#8217;s two types of trees</p>
<ul>
<li>Source Tree &#8211; A source tree is created for each source      sending to each multicast group. The source tree has its root at the      source and has branches through the network to the receivers.</li>
<li>Shared Tree &#8211; Is a single tree that is shared between      all sources for each multicast group. The shared tree has a single common      root, called a rendezvous point (RP). Sources initially send their      multicast packets to the RP, which in turn forwards data through a shared      tree to the members of the group.</li>
</ul>
<p>PIM uses two modes that determines the type of distribution tree to use including one hybrid mode:</p>
<ul>
<li>PIM Sparse Mode (PIM-SM) &#8211; Sparse mode uses a      &#8220;pull&#8221; model to send multicast traffic. it users a shared tree      and therefore requires an RP to be defined.</li>
<li>PIM Dense Mode (PIM-DM) &#8211; Dense mode uses a      &#8220;push&#8221; model that floods multicast traffic to the entire      network. Dense mode uses source trees.</li>
<li>PIN Sparse Dense Mode &#8211; uses both Sparse and Dense      modes throughout its network</li>

A couple of things that you should be considering when buying a new computer are the cost, how easily it will be to upgrade, and the portability. When you look over the price tags of desktops and laptops, the difference is pretty extreme. So what are the key differences between the two? The first one being the cost is a given, but the computer manufactures are putting such an effort into laptop technology that they are offering desktops at a huge discount. The only advantage that a laptop has over a desktop is portability. If you don&#8217;t want the option of taking your computer everywhere with you, then you have a great way to cut down the cost of your new investment.</p>
<p>So, in this age of mobile networking, WiFi access and on the go computing, why would anybody want a desktop computer? Why has a desktop computer still not lost its charm? The answer is actually pretty simple. In the long run, they are a better machine. Have you ever tried to replace the hard drive on a laptop? Did you lose some of the screws? Did the casing not fit exactly as it did before? With a desktop, you simply open the tower, pull the hard drive out and replace it. The same goes for upgrading any of your RAM, media drives or PCI cards.</p>
<p>The reason that desktops are so much more reliable is because they are not portable machines. The first laptop I ever had was bruised and battered within the first year because I took it everywhere. No matter how careful you are, there is always a risk of losing your data because you bumped against a wall and knocked the hard drive a little bit. A desktop sits at your house stagnant until somebody needs to use it. With a little anti-virus software, you can be sure that you&#8217;ll never be at risk from a stupid mistake.</p>
<p>As mentioned before, the cost of the desktop is a huge deciding factor for a lot of consumers. When you get down to the specifications of the desktop versus a laptop that is five hundred dollars more, you will probably be pleasantly surprised. Typically, desktop computer specs surpass most laptop computers. Desktops are usually sold with bigger hard drives and more memory than laptops and come with better software packages already installed.</p>

Integrated in these processors is the Turbo Boost technology, which accelerates the i5 processors when it is needed. Supporting these powerful processors is a minimum of 6 GB of DDR3 read access memory. A user may load up to a maximum of 8 GB of DDR4 RAM in the Lenovo ThinkPad T410s. Therefore, the RAM/i5 processor combination promises seamless performance even when running heavy applications.</p>
<p>The Lenovo ThinkPad T410s is one compact laptop, with a mere screen size of 14 inches, but is loaded with an amazing storage capability. <p>Lenovo did a good job in conceptualizing the Lenovo ThinkPad T410s. This laptop is very handy (as it is only a 14-incher) and is packed with powerful components that are usually found in larger laptops. Its Intel Core i5 processor is powerful enough to drive the most grueling applications. And it has switchable graphics and a lot of RAM.</p>
<p>Now, it gets high marks for portability. One can use the Lenovo ThinkPad T410s for a maximum of 22 hours if loaded with a nine-cell battery. If one is using a six-cell battery, one can use this laptop for around six hours.</p>
<p><strong>Cons</strong></p>
<p>The Lenovo ThinkPad T410s has insufficient VRAM to support hardcore games. Well, it can&#8217;t have everything. After all, Lenovo did not design the ThinkPad T410s as a gaming laptop.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I started the last chapter of the CCNP Study Guide book today which is about implementing IPv6 (IP Version 6). IPv6 is a technology developed to overcome the limitations of the current standard, IP Version 4 (IPv4). The major shortcoming of IPv4 is its limited amount of address space. With the amount of IP enabled devices growing at a steady rate, many regions throughout the world are seeing a need for more IP addresses. In the United States, the Department of Defense (DoD) is a primary driver for the adoption of IPv6 and has set a date of 2008 for all systems with the US government to be set to this standard.</p>
<p>IPv6 allows for better scalability with networks and supplies what seems like a limitless amount of IP addresses to use. IPv6 provides the following enhancements:</p>
<ul>
<li>Larger address space &#8211; IPv6 address are 128 bits which      is 4 times larger than IPv6&#8242;s size of 32 bits. IPv4 had approximately      4,200,000,000 possible address while IPv6 has 3.4 x 10(38) possible      addresses. The number is so big that it is alot simpler to see it in      arithmetic form!</li>
<li>Simplified header &#8211; IPv6 has a simpler header compared      to IPv4 which allows for fast processing. IPv6 is designed in a way that      check-sums aren&#8217;t needed to be computed at every node unlike IPv4.</li>
<li>Support for mobility and security &#8211; Mobility and      security help ensure compliance with mobile IP and IP security (IPsec)      standards. IPv6 provides a standard that allows IP addresses to move      across areas without breaking the established connection. IPsec is also      enabled by default for all IPv6 devices. IPv4 doesn&#8217;t provide either      mobility or IPsec security options by default.</li>
</ul>
<p>IPv6 has three main types of addresses that are similar and different from IPv4:</p>
<ul>
<li>Unicast &#8211; Similar to an IPv4 unicast address, an IPv6      unicast address is for a single interface. Like IPv4, a subnet prefix is      associated with each address. The two different types of unicast addresses      are global aggregatable and link-local</li>
<li>Anycast &#8211; Is a new address type that is assigned to a      set of interfaces on different devices using IPv6. A packet that is sent      to an anycast address goes to the closest interface identified by thr      anycast address. Therefore all nodes using the same anycast addess should      provide the same type of service.</li>
<li>Multicast &#8211; An IPv6 multicast address identifies a set      of interfaces on different devices. A packet sent to a multicast address      is delivered to all the interfaces that is apart of that multicast group      similar to IPv4.</li>
</ul>
<p>IPv6 doesn&#8217;t have broadcast address like IPv4 does. Broadcasts are replaced by multicasts and anycasts. Multicast enables efficient network operation by using a number of specific multicast groups to send requests to a limited number of computers on a network. Multicast groups prevent most of the problems that happens with broadcast storms on IPv4.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Many people have set about using their computers to record their album and single collections and save them as digital files to put on audio CDs or Mp3 players. Its can be very time consuming work that you really want to get right first time, so what are pitfalls, and what tricks are there to make the job better or quicker?</p>
<p>When I first started recording my record collection I made the mistake of recording lots of singles before listening them through. I was driving along listening to my newly transferred collection and gradually realising that every track had faults and was going to need doing again. So the first piece of advice is this &#8211; record a few tracks to start with, and listen them right through before going any further. You really need to make sure your method is reliable and gives a quality product before spending the time working your way through a big collection.</p>
<p>Recording Volume</p>
<p>You&#8217;ll want to be sure your recordings aren&#8217;t too quiet, but don&#8217;t be tempting to whack up the record volume to avoid this. There&#8217;s a fine line between a full recording and an over-recording with clipped peaks. To start with, do a short trial recording with each record you do, edging the recording volume up and down till its just right. After a while you&#8217;ll find out where the setting should be with your hardware. 12 inch singles tend to be louder at source than LPs so watch out for that &#8211; and sometimes those critters play at 45rpm one side and 33rpm the other, so that&#8217;s another thing to watch for.</p>
<p>Time saving methods</p>
<p>One question is whether you have to record in real time, and the answer appears to be a very obvious yes, but that doesn&#8217;t have to be true. You can record a 33rpm album at 45 rpm, then use software to stretch the recording back to its original time. I&#8217;ve tried this method and as far as I can tell there&#8217;s no loss in quality, but it kind of strikes a wrong chord with me and I don&#8217;t use this method in practice. What I tend to do is record in the background while I do something else, or just do something else entirely like eat a meal or go for a run.<br />
I do recommend that after you complete a recording, save it initially as a raw data file (such as.wav) because the save will be much quicker that converting to mp3 on the fly. This way you also save best quality, and you can make compressed format versions later using a batch conversion utility (there&#8217;s a good one in Easy CD-DA Extractor from poikosoft). This is another thing you can run while you go and do something more useful. Wav files are bigger and at one time this would have been an issue, but now that terabyte drives are very affordable there&#8217;s no need to skimp on this one.</p>
<p>Track splitting</p>
<p>When you&#8217;ve recorded your LP you&#8217;re left with two files, one for each side and these need splitting into individual tracks. There a several pieces of software that claim they can do this automatically and it looks like a great time saving opportunity. But for me, quality is king and none of these tools work very reliably, and you&#8217;ll end up with some tracks splitting at quiet sections, or failing to split on short gaps between tracks on some albums. In the end you&#8217;ll spend longer fixing them later than you can ever save in the first place. The best way to split tracks is manually, particularly if its your music because you&#8217;ll know for sure where you want tracks to start and finish.</p>
<p>The best professional recording tool is Adobe Audition (or better still if you can find a copy of syntrillium cooledit 200) but its quite expensive, so the budget conscious can work very well with wavepad which even has a free license version.</p>
<p>Removing crackles</p>
<p>Most people will want to remove the crackles from the finished recording, although I know some people leave them on to keep that vinyl authenticity. For me though, it defeats the object of getting a digital copy.<br />
Crackles can be edited off manually, but that would be very time consuming and there are several very functional tools out there to do it for you. My own favourite is DePopper from Droid Software, because it has a batch run facility, so you can stock it up with 20 albums to clean up while you go and watch the Sopranos. I&#8217;m sure you&#8217;ve all spotted the trend in this article, if you want to save time, batch utilities are your friend.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Because writing machine or assembly language software was so difficult and confusing, people developed supplementary languages that look more like human languages, with names such as FORTRAN, BASIC and Pascal. By making programming languages look more like common human languages, the developers of these top languages desired to make programs simpler to write and modify later on. One of the first high level programing languages was FORTRAN (which is the standard for FORmula TRANslator).</p>
<p>FORTRAN was projected specifically for numerical calculations. Another early high level language was COBOL (COmmon Business- Oriented Language), which was planned for business data processing.</p>
<p>Since each language has a specific purpose, most people aren&#8217;t going to use FORTRAN or COBOL to write video games, operational systems, or word processors (although you can still do so if you truly want). Because programing was still too difficult for many people, computer scientists soon produced both Pascal and BASIC to teach people programing. BASIC &#8211; Beginner&#8217;s All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code &#8211; was planned to teach complete beginners how to program. Beginners could start studying to program by using C, but the the complexity of C can discourage people too soon.</p>
<p>Compared with Pascal, BASIC is less organic, which makes writing a BASIC program comfortable but makes reading and understanding large BASIC programs much more difficult. Pascal is more organized and forces you to plan your program before you write, as you do if you first plan a jaunt before leaving home.</p>
<p>This planning may take longer, but your program and your trip will be more prepared than if you rush into writing the program right away, which can be as broken as showing up in London in the middle of the night with no hotel reservations.</p>

Right now, most of the computer technology is being put into laptops. Manufactures are always trying to make a sleeker, more compact computer. This is very appealing to students because they can take their computers to class, to the library or the dining hall if they have a paper or research that needs to be done. Now that leaves the desktop industry at a struggle. How are they supposed to market a machine that isn&#8217;t portable? They make it cheaper. It&#8217;s not cheaper by quality, it&#8217;s just cheaper by price. Many desktops have the same specifications that their laptop colleagues have, just not the portability.</p>
<p>When you&#8217;re buying your desktop computer, things you should take into consideration are what you are going to be using it for. If you&#8217;re going to use it as a media center to stream video and music all through your house, then you&#8217;re going to want a system with a lot of memory and a big hard drive. Upgrading your hard drive isn&#8217;t as much of an issue as it used to be because a lot of the desktops come with hard drives that are two to three times bigger than one you would get if you bought a laptop. For instance, my Macbook came with a 100 gig hard drive installed. If I had purchased and iMac, I would have gotten a 350gig hard drive installed.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re primarily looking for a machine that you can do word processing on or use to shoot off a couple of emails to your friends, then a bare-bones system is extremely cheap and still a great machine to have. Diagnose what you are going to use your desktop computer for before you buy. Read reviews, go on discussion forums and determine the best machine for your needs. Always remember that getting a computer that is a little better than what you need is optimal, as the shelf life any computer is about three years.</p>
